What is Chiropractic
Chiropractic is the science, art and philosophy dedicated to locating, correcting and preventing interference to the body’s innate (inborn) ability to heal itself. A natural approach to health, Chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system), and how this delicate relationship dictates overall well-being. Put simply, a well aligned spine allows for better nervous system control and therefore an improvement in ones’ overall health.
Chiropractors specialise in the neurological, structural and muscular aspects of the human body with emphasis on maintaining health by correcting the underlying cause. This holistic approach to well-being has always been based on optimising health rather than treating disease, and that ‘being well’ differs from merely relieving one's symptoms.
As stated by Dr Stephen Cummings (1997)
“Symptoms represent the body’s best efforts to heal itself, therefore by treating symptoms you are suppressing the body’s natural response and inhibiting the healing process. Rather than treating symptoms, doctors should concentrate on stimulating the body’s defences to allow for completion of the healing process.”
This is what Chiropractic achieves through better functioning of the master control unit of the body – the nervous system.
Chiropractic was established over 100 years ago and has since grown into the largest drug free healing profession in the world and the third largest primary health care profession after medicine and dentistry.
